Funny Thai TV Commercials – The Romeo and Juliet Geckos
When it comes to funny TV commercials Thailand is in a league of its own. There have been some great funny TV adverts produced and aired on Thai TV and I thought it would be a good idea to show a few of them to readers who were unaware of their existence.
I know most Thailand expats and regular visitors to the Kingdom will have seen this TV commercial before but there are quite a few readers who will of not. And anyhow, could anyone tire of watching this commercial about two lovable Romeo and Juliet gecko lizards who come to a rather sticky end.
The TV commercial is for Shera Flexy Boards which are produced by Mahaphant Fibre-Cement Public Company Limited (MFC), a Thai company based in the provinces of Nakon Pathom and Lopburi. Mahaphant manufacture cement exterior cladding, and ceiling and roof tiles. They have also produced a very funny TV commercial too.
I promise you’ll absolutely adore this YouTube video of two Romeo and Juliet geckos who come down to earth with a bang.
Martyn, there’s a Thai cultural aspect to the gecko story told in the commercial. I came across it online several years ago and I can’t for the life of me find it a second time. I’ve asked a few Thais and they don’t know what I’m talking about (but I might not have asked the question in the exact ‘needed’ way – sometimes it takes many tries before hitting on the right question!)
So if anyone knows what I’m talking about, please share.
Catherine I tried Googling various forms of ‘Thai cultural aspect to the gecko story told in the commercial’, but I had no luck. However maybe someone will come up with the answer.
I did come up with this interesting article on my search and I think it’s the kind of thing which might interest you. It includes a piece about the Gecko commercial.

I’d never seen this before, Martyn, so thanks for the introduction. It led me to lots of other amusing commercials, too. Can’t help with the Thai cultural connection, I’m afraid.
Lawrence – You’d be amazed how many funny Thai adverts are out there. I’m not going to go overkill on them but I will be posting two or three more over the next month or so. I’ve selected what I consider to be some real funny ones. Tune in.
Ive not seen it before, I never thought I would feel so bad for a cartoon lizard, they managed to show real emotion on its face. I would have had no idea what it was promoting though!
Marian – I think the advert is brilliant though I hadn’t thought about the geckos being cartoons before now. They look so lifelike to me.
Thanks Martyn, it’s an interesting read. Oh, and apologies about missing your comment (I don’t remember an alert).
Btw: ho ho ho everyone!
Catherine – A jolly ho ho ho to you and I hope you enjoy your Christmas festivities in the Land of Smiles. Here’s hoping you unwrap a real good time.
Martyn, I’m in the land of the wimpy rain for the holidays… pity 😉
Catherine – I take it you mean England.
I’m in Blighty for Christmas and that’s the first time in seven years and I’m quite looking forward to it having finished work yesterday until the second of January. By the time work told me I could have Christmas off (very late October) Etihad flights to Thailand had spiralled to £1,300. No way Jose.
I’m now planning on hitting Thailand in early February and that’s something to really look forward to in the New Year.
Merry Christmas.
