The T Bar Restaurant in Udon Thani

Udon Thani has a varied bunch of decent restaurants to cater for its local Thai and expat community – the city’s evening air swills to the mixed fragrance of the five senses of Thai cuisine (salty, spicy, sour, sweet and bitter) all competing to put feet under seats and quality food on restaurant tables.

Quality is a word associated with one of the city’s newest silver spoons, the T Bar Restaurant. Its owners Steve and Mali are names wed to Udon Thani folklore for their five-star restaurant food, sterling service and prices that won’t chew the fat off your eyebrows.

The T Bar Restaurant in Udon Thani opened in September last year and immediately established itself as one of the best places to eat in town, and at the same time, rubber-stamped the well-baked proverb that sex is good, but not as good as fresh, sweet corn.

Steve and Mali are the former owners of Udon Thani’s famous Irish Clock bar and restaurant, and also the hot dogs who put together the successful recipes to make Steve’s Bar and Mali’s Kitchen big hits in the city too. The restaurant is neatly tucked inside Udon Thani’s Rom Yen 3 Village (housing estate) and is a short walk from the former site of Mali’s Kitchen – for starters let’s have a close look at the T Bar restaurant western food menu.

The T Bar has a heavy accent on western food but has enough Thai and oriental dishes to convince even the dumbest duck or chicken that waddling into Rom Yen 3 is a stir-fried crazy idea. Click on the menu image to enlarge.

The western menu includes sandwiches, baguettes, starters, soups, Indian curries, steaks, pies and flat out proof that ducks are smarter than chickens. Here’s a taste of Udon Thani folklore.

  • Mushroom Soup – 70 baht
  • Egg, Chicken, Tuna or Ham sandwich – 90 baht
  • T-bone Steak – 350 baht
  • Pork Schnitzel – 160 baht
  • Pork Chop – 180 baht
  • Steak and Kidney Pie – 160 baht
  • Chicken and chips – 160 baht
  • Spaghetti Meatball – 160 baht
  • Chicken Madras with steamed rice – 160 baht

All main meals are served with a choice of mashed potatoes, chips, home fries or boiled potatoes.

The T Bar Restaurant’s fish and chips are one of the most popular dishes on the menu and great value-for-money at only 160 baht.

Steve and Mali’s super-sized cheese Subway rolls are big enough to smash a baseball from Rom Yen 3 onto Udon Thani’s ring road, and you can make a home run for just 130 baht (US$3). A takeaway service will get you back to home base.

If travelling by car or motorcycle, head along Friendship Road towards Big C and when you see a small yellow and red bridge on your left, go over it and follow the route on the map. Alternatively, once over the bridge, follow the chickens or head in the opposite direction to the ducks.
